About Me

I write poems and fiction, and make occasional sound pieces for fun.  The other thing I do with my life is teach!  I love it.  I taught secondary school English and Drama in my twenties and thirties, and then spent some time as a freelance educator in museums.  Now I teach creative writing and poetry, mostly for Morley College, but I’ve also taught creative writing (fiction and poetry) on the B.A. modules for the University of East Anglia – and given creative writing workshops in schools, prisons and museums, as well as for the Arvon Foundation’s Under 18s Week at the Ted Hughes Arvon Centre, Lumb Bank.

I have a PhD in Creative and Critical Writing from UEA; my thesis considered the relationship between environment, interiority and contemporary poetics.  I’m particularly interested in sound and hearing and the sub/urban experience of environment.  I wrote a paper about the ‘feral’ as a figure for poetic thinking – and am currently thinking about pastoral and contemporary writing.

Last year

Throughout March 2017, I gave a series of free poetry and creative writing workshops in   the Reading Room at the Wellcome Collection and presented a paper at the  ACLA Annual Meeting, Universiteit Utrecht, Netherlands in July 2017.

Recently

I read alongside Elizabeth Jane Burnett at The Verve Poetry Festival in Birmingham on 18 February 2018.

My first, full collection of poetry, Natural Phenomena, was published by Penned in the Margins in February 2018 and is the Poetry Book Society’s Spring Guest Selection for that year.

Currently

I’m working on

  • a whole bunch of new poems about – amongst other things – menstruation,
  • a hybrid book of essays and poems on the theme of place, ‘nature’ and sound
  • and a fiction project, with one other ms (SFF/YA crossover) out on submission to agents.

I’m co-editing an anthology of poetry by Morley College poets, due out in July 2018.

Forthcoming

I’m reading at The Shuffle on 28 April 2018 alongside Lorraine Mariner, John Clegg, Lotte Lewis, Edward Doegar, Caroline Maldonado & special international guest, Christos Koukis.

I’m reading with Elaine Kahn at In Town Tonight on 18 May 2018.

I’m taking part in a Pages of Hackney event with awesome folksinging women The Norfolk Broads at Sutton House, Hackney, who are working with The Gypsy Caravan Theatre Project – on May 22 2018.
